Project Watch: City Public Plaza Improvements

One of the landmarks in Iligan City is the public plaza also known as Rizal Park. It is strategically located in the heart of the downtown area just across the famous Maria Cristina Hotel – the city’s oldest hotel.

     

The plaza is a rectangular park surrounded with trees, a stage at one end and a gazebo at the other end. It is quiet a popular site for recreation, political, cultural, and spiritual activities. The public plaza also serves as the venue of the popular weekend night market.

Through the years, the public plaza has undergone several facelifts under different city administrations. Just a few months ago, the bronze bust of Rizal has been removed and a new man-size statue has been put in place.

 

Construction of a Multi-purpose Building

 
Recently, another development is being undertaken.  The project is a joint commitment by the national and local government.  

   

The purpose of the project is to build a roof over a portion of the open area near the stage.

 

Once completed, people watching performances at the plaza will no longer suffer from either heat of the sun or from the rain.  The shelter can also be used as an exhibition area or an evacuation center.
