“Good afternoon Sir/Ma’am. Welcome to Jacko’s Kan-anan!” – a chorus of greetings from the staff rang out when we entered the restaurant.  The cordial and corteous gesture instantaneously made us feel comfortable and welcome.  After we exchanged pleasantries, we were gently ushered to a separate dining room where we comfortably settled ourselves  down.

Paseo de Santiago – New Favorite Spot in Iligan

 

Located in close proximity to the Fishchiboy Market (Talipapa) in Barangay Santiago, Paseo de Santiago - a privately owned property, opened its door several months ago but has already attracted crowds of Iliganons and non-Iliganons alike. The place is still in its infancy of development but I could see that the place is already very popular and always catered to a lot of visitors, mostly college students. On weekends, it is also packed with families and groups of people of different ages. The place is now considered as the selfie capital of Iligan City.

Stilt Houses of Tambacan

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Badjao Village in Brgy. Tambacan.  It was my first time and I was excited to have a glimpse of the community perceived as lazy and unreliable and as incorrigible tramps and thieves. I want to see for myself where and how these people, who have suffered so much from the neglect and indifference of the government and their rejection by society, live.

In Iligan City we have many famous waterfalls. These are the same waterfalls which grab all the press and media spotlight like Maria Cristina Falls, Tinago Falls, Dodiongan Falls, and Mimbalot Falls. They are beautiful falls and deserve much of the press but they also attract crowds.

There are many spectacular waterfalls which get little media attention in Iligan. The reason for their privacy and lack of crowds is that they may be harder to access or hidden upon massive watershed and several rain forests in its topographic areas. One of them is Limunsudan Falls - the two-tiered  waterfall  said to be the Philippines' 2nd highest  with the height of 870 feet, with the lower part cascading alone higher than the Maria Cristina Falls.

Limunsudan Falls never fails to amaze me and no matter how many photos or videos I see on the net, the more I'm captivated by its beauty. I really do need to get there. 

 

I usually wake-up at 6:00 in the morning but that day of May 18, 2014 was an exception. I set the alarm to go off at an odd time of 3:30AM and in the wee hours, kept myself busy preparing for the most anticipated trip to Sitio Limunsudan, Barangay Rogongon.

After the Dodiongan Falls expedition, we then embarked for our way back to the city. Unlike  the previous  trip, everyone preferred to  be quiet.  The last time I checked for the energy level, I just got a weary smile.

It was around 4:00PM when we finally arrived at Jasmine’s Pension Home where most of our guest bloggers stayed.

While some were busy washing up, other bloggers and myself chose to stay at the garden.  We just sat around making idle conversation while re-energizing ourselves with foods courtesy of Jollibee and Jackos’ Kan-anan. After a while, we were joined by the rest of the gang. It was a get-together where  friends and strangers have shared stories, laughter and new friendships.

It was already past 1PM when I arrived at Jacko’s Kan-anan in Hinaplanon where other members of IBS and  bloggers from other parts of the country gathered for the “meet and greet”. The place also served as the jumping-off point for the first waterfalling adventure which was scheduled on that gloomy afternoon. After some “hi-hellos” and picture takings, we started to gather our things and excitedly boarded the vehicle that was assigned to take us to our first destination – Dodiongan Falls.

Dodiongan Falls is located in Brgy. Bonbonon some 14km away from the city proper. The waterfall has a height of 65.60 feet high cascading down to a concrete-like boulder. Photo by Rene Pernia.

Iligan celebrates its special festival day or fiesta every September 29 in honor of St. Michael - the patron saint of Iligan City.

Weeks before the feast day, major streets in the city are already adorned with banderitas. Tarps and streamers are everywhere to welcome visitors and to announce the different activities prepared by the city government hand in hand with the private sectors. One will know it’s going to be fiesta once again when traders from different part of the country start setting up their stalls at Mugna or Taboan in Brgy. Tubod selling garments, housewares, toys ,house decors, etc. Taboan also serves as the venue for the trade fairs showcasing local products and delicacies. But the main attraction of Taboan is the fiesta carnival that host to different shows and rides which thrill adults and children alike.

Come September, Iliganons once again celebrate the month-long festival – the Diyandi Festival sa Iligan 2012. The celebration kicked off last Sept. 1 with the grand opening of the Coke Village - Taboan sa Iligan at Brgy. Tubod followed by the Grand Launching of Diyandi Festival 2012 at the Public Plaza and the announcement of the winners of this year’s Iligan Blogging Contest. The event also signalled the start of this years’ Tourism Month and Fiesta Celebration on September 29.

Anatomy of a Disaster

On December 12, 2011, a developing area of low pressure had persisted about 945 km south-southeast of Guam. Situated along the southern edge of a subtropical ridge, the system tracked steadily westward towards the Philippines. The following day, the system was classified as a tropical depression.  Maintaining a westward track, the depression was forecast to intensify slowly over the following three days. By December 14, convection redeveloped over the low and the system  has attained tropical storm status - Tropical Storm Washi (international designation).

Storm signal no. 2 was already raised yet the weather was just fine that day.  Iligan is not usually hit by strong typhoon and a mere tropical storm is not going to do much damage as so everyone thought.   Nobody suspected that it could get worse.

December 10, 2011 - the last lunar eclipse of 2011.

It was around 10:00PM when I received a text message about the moon being slowly consumed by the earth’s shadow. Immediately, I grabbed my camera  and tripod, went outside and looked for the best site where viewing will be just perfect.

According to the Guinness World Records, the ultimate authority on record-breaking achievement, the most clothes collected in 24 hours weighed 6,880kg  and was achieved by ASDE - Explorers of Murcia (Spain) at the Guadalentín Sports Complex in Murcia, Spain, from 17-18 April 2010.

On November 11, 2011, Iliganons will take the challenge to break that record. The launch of the world breaking attempt will take place at Rizal Park, Iligan City.

MBS5 A Great Success–Part 4

The  tour provided by the IBS and Iligan City Tourism for the MBS5 participants was great.  Explore Iligan had so much fun being part of the event but MBS5 has not come to an end yet. 

Before heading home, there was this announcement about a sponsored dinner.  The group was then sub-divided into two for a special dinner – one group at Kyla’s Bistro and the other at Aruma Café.
